Complete Your EMDR Therapy Training Online

with Suzi Rutti, LISW-S

Part I: January 24-26, 2025

Part II: April 11-13, 2025

9:00am-5:30pm ET each day of training

Join Suzi Rutti, LISW-S for EMDR Therapy Training Online with the Institute for Creative Mindfulness. This training offers the Part 1 & Part 2 curriculum, including all practicum components, in a convenient, online format. The Institute for Creative Mindfulness is known for focusing only on the standard EMDR therapy protocol in our initial trainings, with proper attention paid to dynamics like dissociation and complex trauma, for optimal implementation in clinical settings. The mindfulness-informed and trauma-focused thread that runs through all of our instructional offerings makes implementation of standard EMDR therapy with more complex cases possible from the beginning of your EMDR training experience. In this online format, you will experience an unprecedented opportunity to learn adaptations for telehealth, while still being able to get grounded in how to use EMDR therapy for in-office applications. The training components, when combined with an additional ten hours of required consultation and successful completion of a post-test, meet all requirements for completing an EMDRIA-approved training in EMDR therapy.

Discovered by Dr. Francine Shapiro, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is one of the most researched and utilized methods in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other forms of human distress connected to trauma and adverse life experiences. Whether your goal is to become an EMDR therapist as a specialty, or to integrate EMDR into your existing practice, our mindfulness-infused training program will help you meet your goals. Rutti Counseling & Consultation's EMDR Therapy Training Program is offered through a special license from the Institute for Creative Mindfulness (ICM) with a curriculum designed by Dr. Jamie Marich. The ICM curriculum equips you to work with real-world clinical presentations from day one of training, including how to handle complex and developmental trauma, address dissociation, and implement EMDR into your current setting.

This EMDR Therapy Training curriculum and Suzanne (Suzi) Rutti MSW, LISW-S are approved by the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA), the standards of which require that students engage in:

  • 20 hours of lecture
  • 20 hours of practicum
  • 10 hours of consultation*
  • Required reading and completion of an open-book learning assessment

The cost of consultation is not included in the training program. The trainee is responsible for arranging and paying for their 10 hours of supplementary consultation. At the foundational training level, you are required to use ICM's affiliated consultants or consultants-in-training to complete your consultation. Our affiliates' fees vary depending on specialities and geographical location. Please see our FAQ for more information. You will receive more information about booking consultation at your Part I training.

Completing our full training approved by the EMDR International Association is a multi-tiered process of which this three-day training is your first part. Part I Training (3 days = 21 total hours of lecture and practicum) covers the basics of trauma, the adaptive information processing model, trauma-informed stabilization, and the basic methodology and mechanisms of action used in EMDR Therapy. You will be able to practice EMDR Therapy with certain cases after completion of Part I.

Day 1 of the training course covers the foundational material that you will need on trauma, specifically discussed through the adaptive information processing model (AIP), that you will need to competently deliver EMDR Therapy. By the end of the day you will also see a live demonstration in EMDR Therapy. Day 2 of the course takes you into specific study of EMDR Therapy Phases 1-2, generally seen as the phases of foundation and stabilization. By the end of the day you will be practicing these phases in your practicum sessions under supervision. Decision-making about moving into Phases 3-6 is also discussed, and an overview of the remaining Phases of EMDR is presented in lecture. In Day 3 you will practice Phases 3-8 of EMDR Therapy under supervision in your practicum sessions, which compose the bulk of the day. You will also receive introductory instruction for dealing with abreactions in EMDR Therapy, effectively working with dissociation, and discuss the next steps for your training and consultation development in EMDR.

Day 4 of the training focuses on ethical practice, learning about interweaves, and working with abreaction and dissociation in more complex scenarios. By the end of Day 4, participants will have had a chance to practice supervised implementation of some of these techniques. Day 5 instructs participants on specific protocols/targeting sequences, best practices with special populations and clinical situations, accessing of specialty resources and protocols for variously noted populations, and appropriate use of modifications (according to the EMDRIA definition of EMDR). By the end of Day 5, participants will experience supervised practice of targeting sequences/protocol for identified special populations/situations. In Day 6 participants will review the neurobiology of trauma, present a clinical case study through the EMDR Therapy/AIP framework, complete supervised practice of practice elements, discuss the characteristics of a strong EMDR therapist, and develop a plan for continued consultation.

This training is ideal for clinicians who respond well to self-directed assignments and can adapt well in an online learning format. Also be advised that as part of EMDR therapy training, you are required to do some of your own personal work in the practicum sections of the course. If you are feeling any trepidation about completing your training in this format, please wait until in-person trainings are possible or widely available again. By registering for this course in this online format, you acknowledge you are aware of this component of the training. Please feel free to direct any questions you have to [email protected] before registering.

ICM team members will assist training as facilitators of practicums.
